Lessons Learned from the Death of a Father

We All Leave a Legacy

 

Do you ever think about what you really leave behind when you die? I never
really thought about it until my father passed away, and it may be the most
profound lesson I have learned so far. You see, I know the scripture about a
city on a hill cannot be hidden in Jesus' sermon on the mount, and I
understood what it meant, but I really never saw it played out like this.

My grandmother, Nana, was as close to a saint as anyone I have ever known.
Her legacy was known to those who had any contact with her well before she
passed away. I'm not sure why I was so surprised that her son was going to
be remembered in similar fashion. Maybe it's because I knew so much about
his "dirty laundry". Maybe because my vision of him was jaded from being his
son, or because I have been somewhat removed from his daily life for the
past 10 years living so far away. I have always be proud of my father, don't
get me wrong, but I don't think I have ever been more proud to be his son
than I have been over the past 2 weeks.

Almost Missed It

I just returned from a brief vacation, or rather, time of solitude with my wife and a few new friends.  As we began our journey from Broken Arrow, OK. to the Cumberland Mountains of Southwest TN. we were filled with anticipation of a much needed time of peace and quiet, not to mention some new ideas and inspiration that was to be provided by our friends there.   Over half-way through the week, just following my recovery from the long drive, I already found my thoughts drifting toward the drive home and the eminent return to routine.  Where was the peace?  How disappointed I
