Pastor's Corner articles are written for a primary target audience of our "mother" church, Our Savior Lutheran.  Sometimes the content of these artilcles may not relate directly to events or issues at Ablaze.  They are included here because in almost all cases, the ideas and biblical principals that are related in the articles can be applied to other areas of our lives.

Pastor's CornerOur Strategic Ministry Plan

Through the help of Carol Stoop, who is a part of Strategic Ministry Planning Ministry Services associated with the LCMS, we have a new mission statement,  “Sharing the Gospel with Compassion!” This new mission statement is to help us focus on what God wants us to do as a congregation. It is Paul who proudly proclaims his mission as, “the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace” (Acts 20:24). The term gospel refers to the good news of all that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is and makes available to us.

Who Is the Richest?

Who would you consider to be the richest people on earth? Some would say, “Those with the most toys,” while others, “the ones with the most money.” According to Jesus, earthly riches can be dangerous and could choke the word of God from one’s life. Solomon proclaims, “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death” (Prov. 11:4).

New Wine

Grapes in Biblical times and in the area of Syria were harvested in August and September. Once in large vats they were crushed under foot or pressed. The juice that was produced was poured into jars or wineskins for storage and fermentation. The skins were usually made of goat hides with an opening left for gases to be released.  New wine was always placed into new wineskins because the new skins could stretch and handle the pressures of fermentation. Old wineskins would have been fully stretched and would burst under the new pressures.
 Jesus
refers to this concept, "Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst…”
(Matt. 9:17).

In the story of Job, Elihu who was very
angry describes his bottled up words like the pressures of fermentation. “Inside I am like bottled-up wine, like new wineskins ready to burst” (Job 32:19). Although aged wine at times may have a better taste than new wine, new wine is still produced and served. In the wedding at Cana it is the newest wine that is the best. Jesus refers to His message and way of life as, “new wine…in new wineskins” (Luke 5:38). Jesus also indicates that this new wine is the best, just like the new wine Jesus produced at the wedding in Cana.

The Pharisees thought that their old ways, their old rites and rituals, their old legalistic display of piety was better than the new message and way of life that Jesus was proclaiming and living. Old wine can be bad because it is not prepared properly; age is one thing, excellence with age is another! Old wine can become bitter and sour, new wine on the other hand is fresh and sweet. The new wine offered by Jesus is just that, a break from the old, the new has come. His wine is sweet forever, changeless in its purity and excellence. His wine is full of grace that will stretch the hearts of men.

Throughout the new year we will be looking at the new wine that Jesus offers. Our theme for the new year is
“God’s New Wine in 2009.”

Bursting with Him,
Pastor Dreier
